Some of the fat quarters I bought recently had some square-ish bits of cardboard in them, I cut out a 2 1/2 inch square in the middle of it which then frames the fabric so you can see what the cut piece would look like. I also find this useful to place on a piece of fabric to focus on the colours without being distracted by the whole piece of fabric. Here's the "tool":
This black cats and bulldogs may not make it into the final quilt (too black) but it was fun making it.
